    Quintilian was born in northern Spain, but he was probably educated in Rome, where he afterward received some practical training from the leading orator of the day, Domitius Afer. He then practiced for a time as an advocate in the law courts. He left for his native Spain sometime after 57 but returned to Rome in 68 and began to teach rhetoric, combining this with advocacy in the law courts.     Our Rhetoric and Composition program has been a national leader for well over a decade. The book may challenge first and second year students. I am considering the book for a level rhetoric course, and I anticipate my students will find the textbook accessible. The book clearly imagines students as its audience, and it does offer context and definitions for the more advanced ideas.

      But Lively’s hateful rhetoric is not, in fact, an outlier among his peers. Originally from the supposedly liberal bastion of Massachusetts, Lively made a name for himself peddling anti-LGBT animus as “the word of God” in Oregon and California, where he served as the state director for the American Family Association. the current status and future of rhetoric in literary and critical theory as envisaged by critics such as Kenneth Burke, Paul de Man and Jacques Derrida. This insightful volume offers an accessible account of this contentious yet unavoidable term, making this book invaluable reading for students of literature, philosophy and cultural studies.
